This project was worked on in my "Uncovering Renewal Within" class, an Advanced Studio combining Interior Architecture Department with the Landscape Architecture Department.
Our task was to come up with a program and design for the abandoned Memorial Hospital area in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
I wanted Pawtucket to have a space with its own unique identity - Memorial Hospital becomes a residential space, prepared food area, farmers market, and public park designed around the idea of public performance.
Inspired by Shakespeare in the Park, there are performance gazebos spread through the park guiding the community through the area - with a larger performance (indoor / outdoor) stage. Encouraging local art, community gathering, and a wider reach. The gazebos are all different, encouraging multipurposed use - allowing residents and community members to add relevant programs - (yoga, art fairs, club meetings, bake sales, etc.)
The prepared food building is meant to attract local residents and students as a place to meet, while the farmers market can bring in vendors from the wider Rhode Island area.
My aim is to unite Pawtucket with a special cultural identity they can be proud of Island area.
